ABOUT WIL HERNANDEZ:
Wil Hernandez was born and raised in the Philippines. A graduate of
Visual Communications (major in Advertising Design) at the University of
the Philippines, Wil came on full-time staff with an international,
interdenominational Christian organization right after college and
served under it for 18 years.

In 1995, he went to the U.S. with his wife Juliet and his two sons,
Jonathan and David, to pursue his Master of Theology (Th.M.) degree
majoring in Counseling Ministry in a seminary in Texas. Upon graduation
in 1999, the family moved to Southern California where Wil started his
doctorate program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. With
additional studies in Christian Spirituality at the University of Notre
Dame and Loyola Marymount University, he finished his Ph.D. degree in
Practical Theology with a special concentration in
spirituality/spiritual formation. Upon graduation, Wil joined The
Leadership Institute, a parachurch organization specializing in the
integration of spiritual formation with leadership development.

Wil holds a private practice in a professional office in Pasadena doing
counseling, life coaching, and spiritual direction (including running a
9-month Ignatian Spiritual Exercises for small groups following the 19th
annotation of St. Ignatius of Loyola). On the side, Wil periodically
teaches various courses focusing on the spirituality of Henri Nouwen
(both “live” and via online) at various Protestant and Catholic
institutions such as Fuller Theological Seminary, Azusa Pacific
University (CA), Loyola Marymount University (CA), Spring Arbor
University (MI), Oblate School of Theology (TX), Tyndale College and
Seminary (Canada) and Hope International University (CA).

In conjunction with The Nouwen Legacy, which he started under the
umbrella of The Leadership Institute, Wil regularly conducts retreats
and workshops for various churches and ecumenical groups all year round
across the U.S. and abroad focusing mostly, but not exclusively, on the
spirituality of Henri Nouwen. He has done several workshops on Nouwen at
the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. He is a frequent workshop
presenter during the annual SOULFeast conference hosted by the Upper
Room Ministries and serves on the faculty of its Academy for Spiritual
Formation. Wil also lectures for the Institute for Adult Spiritual
Renewal (formerly Retreats International) at Loyola University in
Chicago. Every now and then, he gets invited to teach spiritual
direction courses at both Pecos Benedictine Monastery’s School of
Spiritual Direction (NM) and at the Center for Spiritual Development’s
Art of Spiritual Direction and The Source programs (Orange, CA). As an
active member of Spiritual Directors International (SDI), he serves on
the Editorial Panel of Presence Journal and regularly conducts Nouwen
workshops at SDI conferences.

At present, Wil occupies the E.A. and Bessie Andrews Chair in Spirtiual
Formation at Spring Arbor University in Michigan where he also directs
its Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation (MFSL) online program. He
remains as an affiliate staff of The Leadership Institute based in
Southern California.

For the past three years now, Wil has been a part of the San Fernando
Valley Oblates Group connected with Saint Andrew’s Benedictine Abbey in
Valyermo, California—the same monastery where he wrote the final
touches of his PhD dissertation work on Henri Nouwen in 2004. Together
with his wife Juliet, they worship at St. James Episcopal Church in
South Pasadena where he is actively involved in its parish ministries.

Wil is the author of two books on Nouwen (Henri Nouwen: A Spirituality
of Imperfection and Henri Nouwen and Soul Care: A Ministry of
Integration) and a third forthcoming one on which this guided retreat
will be based: Henri Nouwen and Spiritual Polarities: A Life of Tension
(all published by Paulist Press). His personal website is:

On Saturday we will welcome both men and women who are only able to participate in this one day of the weekend. For those who join us Saturday, we invite you to do so in the spirit of the retreat and reflection begun on Friday evening, aware that the full weekend is dedicated to looking within and taking stock of our journeys. Saturday will be a continuation of this intention to slow down and prayerfully consider all the choices we make.

She is also President of the Red Bird Foundation, which supports the growth and spiritual development of those in need and furthers a ministry both to those in prison and those living in third world or disadvantaged cultures.

A psychotherapist who ministered to those facing issues of grief and loss, Paula worked with the Peale Foundation, founded by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, from 1980 until his death in 1993. Today her work includes leading workshops and retreats related to spirituality, aspiring writers, and women’s gatherings, including Women’s Initiation and Rites of Passage. In recent years she has teamed with Richard Rohr to present seminars on the Male/Female Journey and Spirituality in the Two Halves of Life. Her foundation is sponsoring Womenspeak 2007, a gathering of women of all nations and creeds to honor the unspoken wisdom helf by Spirit within a woman’s heart.

Tai Chi Easy Classes

Wii resume in the fall of 2012.  Begin your week aligning your mind, body, and spirit with Tai Chi Easy ~ Enjoy 7 weeks of Tai Chi with Fern Cameron, DC. Mondays: October 3, 17, 24, 31 and November 7, 14 and 21. Times: Class A: 11:00-12:30    Class B: 12:45-2:15. Cost: $126 for the series.

Tai Chi is a series of graceful, centering movements (some call Tai Chi “meditation in motion”) which when practiced regularly strengthens the body, calms and sharpens the mind, and lifts the spirit. Tai Chi Easy is a carefully developed approach that makes Tai Chi more assessable and conducive for learning and eventually for practicing on one’s own. Instead of the traditional 24 or 48 movements, Tai Chi Easy uses only 5 essential movements so that learning Tai Chi is not only easier but also beneficial right from the beginning. The class will begin with gentle, flowing movements along with relaxed breathing in preparation for performing the Tai Chi Easy movements. At the conclusion of this series of classes each student will have a self-empowering wellness routine which can be  incorporated into their daily life.

Fern Cameron, D.C. has been a wholistic chiropractor for the past 24 years. Teaching Tai Chi is aligned with Fern’s chiropractic philosophy – the healing takes place through the integration of body, mind and spirit. Over the years, Fern has studied with many outstanding Tai Chi teachers and is certified as a Tai Chi Easy Practice Leader. Fern has also been trained in the Arthritis Foundation’s, Tai Chi for Arthritis” program. Fern is the creator of the workshop, A Wholistic Approach to Strengthening the Brain and Calming the Mind.  She is enthusiastic to share this easier to learn form of Tai Chi which can be practiced throughout one’s life, enhancing one’s sense of vitality, strength and inner peace.

This class is appropriate for people of all fitness levels as the moves are gentle and easily adaptable.

Call Fern at (516)621-0316 for more details.

Dear Friend of Inisfada,

As we enter the Autumn season of Harvest and Thanksgiving, it is fitting to reflect on our many blessings.

On Thursday evening, October 27, we will be honoring the Mission and Ministry of St. Ignatius Jesuit Retreat House in a way

our first benefactors, Genevieve and Nicholas Brady, may have celebrated. Please join us at our Harvest Moon Ball as

we take a step back in time and look toward the future of our beloved Inisfada. Our mission statement is implicit,

“Inisfada offers a spiritual home – a sacred and welcoming environment where people of all faiths and cultures can

deepen their relationship with God so they may be renewed and be men and women for others.”

I invite you to express how the retreat house has made a difference in your life by taking an ad in our Harvest Moon Journal.

On behalf of the Board and Staff of Inisfada, thank you for your contribution to the Mission and Ministry of St. Ignatius

Jesuit Retreat House.

Gratefully,

Lenten Book Series ~ Radical Gratitude by Mary Jo Leddy

Wednesday, March 7    10am-12pm     Come join us for our Lenten Book Series: Radical Gratitude by Mary Jo Leddy. The series will take place every Wednesday from 10am-12pm for 6 weeks. Facilitator Jan LaBorne. $60pp for the series or $55pp if the book is purchased at the St. Ignatius book store. Future Dates: 14, 21, 28 and April 4. Future dates: May 16 & June 13.

From one of Canada’s most courageous religious Writers and social activists comes this invitation to imagine gratitude as the most radical attitude to living life. Gratitude bridges the gulf between our spiritual and material concerns. The dissatisfaction bred into us by advertising and consumerism is soul-destroying and dispiriting. Gratitude arises in that space where are deepest longings find the glass of life to be half-full rather than half-empty. By coming to appreciate the earthly things around us that give true joy, we open the path to greater authenticity and discover what is most real in ourselves. “I believe that at least once in our lives, perhaps once in a year, maybe even once a day, we are recalled to our true selves and to the meaning of our lives. Such revelations are given to each of us in generous recurrence. These invitations can be missed, denied, accepted or rejected – life impresses but it does not impose.”

Mary Jo Leddy is not a pop psychologist offering placebos. Her insights are garnered from her active life divided between university teaching and co-managing a 4-house refugee sanctuary in downtown Toronto. He rinsights in this book are both accessible and authentic. Appreciating what we have been given provides more real satisfaction than endless cravings for more.
